Xbox Live Arcade Wednesday: Lumines Live (aka Microtransaction Rape)

Time for another sneak-up-on-you surprise XBLA title. After months of TBA release dates, Lumine Lives finally hit XBLA Marketplace today. But is it everything we hoped for? No, it's definitely not. I hoped for a fun affordable casual puzzle game experience, instead LL is nothing more than a deceptive, confusing scam of microtransactions. Basically Lumines Live consists of Puzzle Mode, Mission Mode, and vs. CPU mode, all for only 1200 MS Points ($15). That's not too bad. However, each mode only lasts for five levels. If you actually want to continue the game, you will have to purchase an add-on...for EACH MODE! This is asinine. Each mode "extra" weighs in at 600 MS Points, this brings our Lumines Live total to 3000 MS Points ($37.50). $37.50 is not a microtransaction!

This is a great example of the splintering of media that I discussed with movies. It's just easier to do it with games.

Only you can prevent this sort of thing by saying, "Thanks, but no thanks."
